Our History
In 2000 our parent company, NEC Corporation, was granted over 2,000 US patents, placing it second overall, and first among non-US companies. Not surprising when you consider that it invested over 6 percent of its net sales in R&D in fiscal year 2000 alone. We invite you learn more about NEC R&D.

NEC Express5800 servers and BIGLOBE infrastructure
Operated by NEC, BIGLOBE is one of largest ISPS in Japan and is renowned for its rich content and user-friendly web site. The service, which first began operating in July 1996, had 4.98 million subscribers to its value added services and 3.79 million subscribers to its Internet access services as of the end of June 2001.
Services available to consumers include e-mail, personalized news and financial information, search engine, instant messaging, online photo albums, and an online personal organizer. One of BIGLOBE’s most successful services is My Hosokyoku; a personal channel that lets users broadcast home movies using streaming video technology.
NEC Robot for more natural human-machine interface
Until now, personal robots have been seen as just another high tech gadget, amusing and cute at their best, annoying and useless at their worst. NEC Corporation is striving to change all that, with researchers working to improve the interface and interaction between humans and machines by developing a new concept—partner-type personal robots.
NEC’s first foray into personal robot design dates back to 1997, when development of the R100 personal robot began. Two years later, R100 proved the feasibility of developing personal robots for use in the home. The R100 was just the start. In January 2001, NEC unveiled a prototype of its latest personal robot called PaPeRo (short for Partner-type Personal Robot).
